AREFLH is a partner on the WASTE4SOIL project “Turning food waste into sustainable soil improvers for better soil health and improved food system”. It aims at developing applicable recycling technical pathways to transform Food Processing Residues (FPR) into improvers, through a circular, system, and multi-actor approach. All food chain actors are involved at the regional level, thereby closing specific loops (nutrients, organic matter, water).
On 3- 5 June 2025 AREFLH has participated in the twenty-fourth month Consortium Meeting of the Waste4Soil project, at the LAB Campus, Lahti, Finland.
The three-day event, organized in a hybrid format, brought together the consortium’s 27 partners and 1 associated partner. The meeting consisted of presentations, discussions, and interactive sessions to review the project’s progress and plan the next months of the project.
The first day opened with the welcome of the project's coordinator and the partner LAB, where the work package leaders and task leaders presented updates on the achievements of these two years of work. Participants engaged in thematic discussions focusing on soil health improvements, food processing residues, and the work of the seven living Labs. The day concluded with a social dinner, providing an opportunity for deeper networking and collaboration.
The second day began with presentations on the work packages focused on the co-creation of business models and the development of a sustainable investment and revenue model.
In the afternoon, participants took part in three field visits, which included:
- Stora Enso Heinola Fluting Mill,
- OxyPower HTC™ facility,
- and guided tours of both a local farm and a food processing factory.
These visits provided valuable insights into innovative industrial and agricultural practices supporting soil health and sustainability.
The third day of the meeting was dedicated to a workshop on “Soil Health Indicators & Soil Improvers”, bringing together participants from the DeliSoil, Waste4Soil, and Bin2Bean projects.
The afternoon session featured a site visit to Biopaja, offering participants a practical perspective on innovative approaches to soil improvement and bio-based solutions.
The Waste4Soil Consortium Project Meeting and the visit to the Finland Living Lab marked an important milestone in strengthening collaboration, exchanging knowledge, and advancing the project’s mission to enhance soil health and promote sustainability.
