AREFLH has a partner on the WASTE4SOIL project “Turning food waste into sustainable soil improvers for better soil health and improved food system”. Waste4Soil aims at developing applicable recycling technical pathways to transform Food Processing Residues (FPR) into improvers, through a circular, system, and multi-actor approach. All food chain actors are involved at the regional level, thereby closing specific loops (nutrients, organic matter, water).
AREFLH from 12-14 November 2024, has participated in the second edition of the Mission Soil Week. The three-day event took place in Brussels, in a hybrid format.
The first two days of event of the European Mission Soil Week were dedicated to the presentation of different projects and participation in the field visit. waste4soil delegates participated in two field visits; "Sustainable Land Management in Agriculture" at CRA-W Centre Wallon de Recherches agronomies’, Gembloux, and the Sustainable Land Management in Forestry at Tivoli Park, Mechelen in Belgium, which was the opportunity to discuss and program future activities.
The third day of the event was dedicated to the Mission Soil Platform Cluster, which was the first event of the cluster meeting for projects, providing an excellent opportunity to connect and learn from each other.
This event brought together Mission Soil-funded projects and representatives from the European Commission to exchange experience, research, and results of the projects, and coordinate future activities to support further and advance Mission Soil’s objectives.
The event included three main clusters:
- Data & Knowledge Management
- Communication & Stakeholders
- Engagement Soil Indicators & Monitoring.
Their overall aim was to ensure that projects related to Mission Soil regularly exchange on specific topics, develop timely and concrete actions for cooperation, and in this way, maximize the synergies.
The European Mission Soil Week is an annual event designed as a major European gathering that brings together the European soil community. Researchers, policymakers, farmers, foresters, spatial planners, landowners and land managers, businesses and organizations as well as the general interested public meet to discuss challenges, opportunities, and solutions for healthy soils. The European Mission Soil Week therefore brings together and mobilizes communities to protect and restore soil health.
