Production in the EU:
Value of the European horticulture in 2011: 19.8 Billions €, that is -2,6% compared to 2010. The value of the production falls by -12.1% between 2004 and 2009.
Principal European countries (in value): NL (33% - 26.000 ha), IT (13%), FR (12% - 8.000 ha), OF (12%), ES (11%)
That is to say 60 000 companies of flowers and decorative plants (55 000 in nurseries), a number which is falling in most principal producing European countries.
Imports in the EU
Total value of the imports in Europe: 1.5 Billions € for 423.000 Tons (T) including 75% of cut flowers of which: 100 000 T from Kenya - 95% of flowers cut and 40 000 T from Ethiopia - 95% of cut flowers
The cut flowers sector is peculiar : thevolume of cut flowers imports represent 317 000 T. It is a strong rise: 240 000 T in 2001, including 42% from Kenya and Ethiopia.
Exports starting from the EU
European exports: 1.75 Billions € , that is 598 000 T of which: 74% since the Netherlands (+ 4.6%), 6% from Italy (- 3%), 6% from Germany (+10%)
For the Netherlands, platform world of the horticultural trade, exports relate to a significant portion of products initially imported from another country of the EU and third countries.
The cut flowers only represents 16,5% of the European horticultural exports, that is to say approximately 100 000 T mainly towards Russia and Switzerland.
